Peer Support Worker

Your Opportunity:

The Peer Support Worker (PSW) plays an important role in fostering connection, safety, and engagement with individuals experiencing or at risk of drug poisoning within the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre (SMCHC). Drawing on lived experience with substance use, recovery, and navigating health and community systems, the PSW provides compassionate, non-judgmental support and helps individuals access timely medical, addiction, and recovery-oriented services. As part of a dedicated on-campus response team, the PSW works alongside a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Protective Services personnel and reports to the Care Manager. Together, the team provides timely outreach, harm reduction support, safety assessment, and recovery-focused engagement following drug poisoning events or other substance-related concerns. The PSW collaborates closely with the Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) team, including addiction medicine clinicians, nurses, social workers, and community partners to support a coordinated and person-centered response. Through meaningful peer engagement and system navigation, the PSW helps reduce stigma and barriers to care, builds trust, and connects individuals with appropriate medical, psychosocial, addiction, and recovery supports during critical moments of need.

As a Peer Support Worker, you will provide interventions and supports that are complementary to the work of a multi-disciplinary outreach team. The team functions together to provide treatment, rehabilitation and support services for the diverse needs of clients navigating life impacting experiences. Through your own lived experience(s), and experiences of recovery and resilience, as the Peer Support Worker, you can authentically inspire hope to clients by sharing your story, offering mentorship and support; advocating for client needs; and supporting an integrated and resiliency/recovery-oriented health care and treatment experience.
